George W. Dunne National
Golf Course
Forest Preserve District
of Cook County (IL)
SE by
Jim Schmidt
and
Frank Pazda
Sources: Scorecard and Yardage Book from course. Hole descriptions
by Frank Pazda. Visit to course.
SE credits: The trees, bushes, and background are "original," but
we owe a great debt to Lee Ritze. The blotches of color used to make
the trees and background come from his Merion Course, as do the cloud
effects, which we borrowed intact. Some color blocks also come from
Mark Willett. Some of the smaller objects have been adopted from
other courses. Their origin is uncertain.
About the course: George W. Dunne National Golf Course is a municipal
course managed by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County,
Illinois. It is located at 159th St. and Central Avenue in the Chicago
metroplex. We have tried to recreate it for SE as accurately as
possible, though in reality it is even more wooded in some places
than is possible to replicate within the SE 240 object limit.

A note on difficulty: As is obvious from the course rating and slope,
this is a very difficult course in real life. If anything, the SE
version is _less_ difficult than the real one. We have not knowingly
included elevations or other elements that make the course unreasonably
difficult.
Because of the length and the large amounts of water and sand, the
course plays very difficult under some conditions. On calm days,
scores in the mid to low 60s are quite possible, but with any wind
over 10 mph, scores will rise. Realistically, the course _should_
be played with a moderate to high wind. It _is_ in "The Windy City"
after all!
There are a few bits of knowledge about the course that may help. Most
of the greens are very large and slope fairly severely back to front,
so it's best to miss below the hole. On several of the tee shots, a
draw/hook or fade/slice may put you in a better position. On some holes,
a shot of this nature is practically required if you don't want to lay
up off the tee. If the course seems too difficult, playing from the blue
tees may help. In real life, the gold tees are rarely set out anyway.
Comments or questions about the course can be directed to Jim Schmidt
[J.SCHMIDT20] or Frank Pazda [F.PAZDA] on GEnie.
